Fever Home Opener Preview and Final Roster is…

leave a comment »

On Saturday June 6th the Indiana Fever will host their first home game against the Minnesota Lynx, along with attempting to set a new Guinness World Record for the most people lighting a glow stick at the same time at a single venue.

This will be the Fever’s first season with new head coach Stephanie White after coach Lin Dunn retired the previous year. But White is no stranger to the team workings as she was the Fever’s assistant coach for three years before becoming head coach. When asked about her plans and changes for the upcoming season coach White says that one of the main changes will be the pace at which the game will be played, “Fast paced and quick moving” were two ways used to describe the up coming season and the way that the team would play.

Today, the Fever announced their 12-player roster. Rather than cutting a player, Shavonte Zellous has been placed on the Suspended list while she plays for the Croatian national team from June 11 – 28. When she returns, the team will have to make a hard decision about who they cut at that time. The 12 players for the Fever are:
Tamika Catchings
Erlana Larkins
Layshia Clarendon
Briann January
Briana Butler
Jeanette Pohlen
Natasha Howard
Natalie Achonwa
Marissa Coleman
Maggie Lucas
Shenise Johnson
Lynetta Kizer

The players can rest easy for now and prepare for their first game of the season against the Chicago Sky. With so many good and up-and-coming players, the Fever stand a good chance at making the playoffs again this year.

Results for the 2013 WNBA Conference Semi-Finals

leave a comment »

As the Conference semi-finals come to a close, we get that much closer to the WNBA Finals as eight teams become four. As two teams swiped their opponents out in two games, others won by a last second shot.

For the Eastern Conference, the final match up will be between the # 2 seed Atlanta Dream and the # 4 seed the Indiana Fever. These two teams have been in this position before, as this is the third year in a row that these teams will have met in the playoffs. After losing their first game against the # 3 Washington Mystics the Dream rallied together and won their last two games, including the critical game 3. The Fever swiped  the series from the # 1 Chicago Sky, with an incredible win at home.

For the Western Conference, the two teams are the # 3 Phoenix Mercury and the # 1 seed Minnesota Lynx. Also sweeping the series the from the # 4 Seattle Storm the Lynx have made to the Conference finals three years in a row. And after an unpredictable game 3 against the # 2 L.A. Sparks, with a last second shot from rookie Brittney Griner, the Mercury have made to the conference finals after missing the playoffs completely last year.

Both games will start on Thursday September 26th with the Fever @ the Dream at 7:00 pm. Followed immediately by the Mercury @ the Lynx at 9:00 pm.

Indiana Fever vs. New York Liberty Results and Recap

leave a comment »

Last night the Indiana Fever played against the New York Liberty. After playing against the Washington Mystics twice in three days, the Fever hosted the New York Liberty. This was the second time the Fever played against the Liberty this year.

The game started off with an early Fever lead, 9-5, but the Liberty tied the game at 9 shortly after. There was a lot of contact in this game, more than usual, which caused Tamika Catchings to get two early fouls. The score went back and forth between the two teams with no real leader, and the score was tied at the end of the first quarter at 21.

The game continued on that was for awhile longer, as neither team were able to take a lead higher than 3. Like before, the Fever had trouble with their shooting, but Erin Philips seemed to have struggled the most. With only six points and no 3-pointers, she really struggled with the long shots. But made up for it with her amazing defence. In one incedent she missed a basket but got a steal right after and then made the basket. As the quarter continued on, the Fever picked up some momentum, took the lead, and kept the lead 42-33 at the half.

The third quarter was in the Fever’s favor as they held the Liberty to 33 points for almost four minutes. The Fever kept the lead the entire third quarter, they still struggled with their shooting but their defense kept them in the lead. Fever hold onto lead 53-48 at the end of the third.

Things started going down hill about halfway through the fourth quarter, despite the Fever’s defence the Liberty pushed past and took the lead. This is where the Fever’s struggle with their shooting really took a toll. The Fever put up a fight till the end and almost put the game into over time after two 3-pointers from Catchings. But alas the Fever were not able to pull it off and the Fever lose 77-72.

Despite the loss the Fever still had reasons to celebrate, Shavonte Zellous was announced as a reserve for the Eastern conference All-Star team for her first time!! She will join head coach Lin Dunn and teammate Tamika Catchings on the All-Star team which will play on Saturday July 27th 3:30 pm in Connecticut.

Briann January got a season high of 21 points, and Erlana Larkins got a career high 16 rebounds. Great job by both of these two players.

The Fever’s next game will be on Thursay July 25th at the Tulsa Shock.
The Fever’s next HOME game will by on August 3rd against the Chicago Sky.

Fever vs. Connecticut Sun Game 1 of Eastern Conference Finals Results

leave a comment »

Last night the Indiana Fever play against the Connecticut Sun in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals in Connecticut. The Sun have beaten the Fever in three out of the four games that were played in the regular season.

Tamika Catchings opened up the game with a 3-pointer for the Fever and the Fever took the lead early. The Fever did a really good job at keeping the ball away from the Sun, and getting those rebounds. But the Sun catch up and the game is separated by only one point, going back and forth between the two teams. And the Fever pull ahead and lead by the end of the first quarter. The Fever got four 3-pointers in the first, but also two fouls on Briann January. The Fever lead at the end of the first quarter 22-14.

Jeanette Pohlen comes into the game in the second quarter. Pohlen has not played in the past two playoffs game. As the game progresses the players became more physical between the teams. As the Sun close in on the Fever, the Fever have to fight harder for the ball. At the end  of the half the game is tied at 30. In the next half the Fever really need to not play as physical as it is costing them fouls that they cannot afford to have.

At the beginning of the third both teams have stepped up their game. The Fever start to fall behind at the Sun take the lead for only the third time 38-34. The Fever have also struggled with their scoring and are forced to shoot the ball from a distance. Catchings has also struggled with her shooting and the Fever trail at the end of the third 52-43.

Katie Douglas got her momentum back in the and got her team some more 3-pointers. The Fever really needed this kick in order to be able to catch up and to be able to play with the same energy they had in the first half. And though the Fever had that kick they were not able to catch up and the Sun win 76-64.

Game 2 will be in Indiana on Monday October 8th at 8:00 pm. The Fever will need to inprove on their shooting, and need to come out and play like they did in the first half. If they do that, they will win their next game.

The Minnesota Lynx beat the L.A. Sparks in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals on Thursday. Game 2 will be on Sunday in LA @ 3:30 pm.

Yesterday the Indiana Fever played against the Atlanta Dream in game 2 of round 1 of the playoffs, this game was vital to the Fever in order to stay in the playoffs as the Dream led 1-0.

Katie Douglas opens up the game with a 3-pointer but that was the only points Douglas got for the entire game. But the Dream quickly pulled ahead, and it was starting to look like game 1 for the Fever. But the Fever got the lead back with one minute left in the first quarter 19-18, but the Fever trailed at the end of the first quarter 24-22 with a last second shot from Ketia Swanier that resulted in a 3-pointer for the Dream.

Throughout the start of the second quarter the game went back and forth between the two teams, this continued for awhile until the Fever finally pulled ahead 32-28 with six minuets to go. The star players for this game were not Douglas and Catchings this time as Douglas missed 3 free throws in a row, and Catchings started out 0-7 in baskets. the Fever lead by two points at the end of the half 47-45.

When the Fever came back out after the break they really played like they were in the playoffs, they got more rebounds and played better defense then in their last game. Catchings finally got herself some points and the Fever lead at the end of the third 78-65. After that they Fever stayed on top and kept the Dream from scoring and we kept scoring. And the Fever win 103-88.  Tamika Catchings got 25 points, and January got 24 points.

This was a huge win for Indiana, we have made it to the finals so many times and have not yet won a championship, this game helped keep out hopes alive for a chance at going further and winning the championship. The next game determines who wins the East semifinals, it will be in Indiana tomorrow at 7:00.  The Fever have to play like they did yesterday in order for them to win.

Result of the playoffs so far:

Indiana Fever Updates

leave a comment »

Indianapolis has always been a huge sport state with the Indy 500, Colts, Pacers, and the Indiana Fever.

There are only 12 teams in the WNBA and Indiana is one of the states lucky enough to have a team. It is so much fun to go and watch the games in the summer.

However, this off-season for the Fever has been full of moving and switching players. Ebony Hoffman has now switched to the L.A Sparks. Ebony has played 6 years in Pro Basketball and all of them have been with the Fever.

Tully Bevilaqua has moved to the San Antonio Silver Stars. Tully has played 11 years in pro basketball, with her last 6 years spent with the Fever. It is sad for some people and a happy time for others but for one thing, it will be interesting to see how they all do with their new teams.

Nevertheless, we still have some of the best players, with Katie Douglas, Tamika Catchings, Jessica Davenport, Tammy Sutton-Brown and many others. The newest member of the Fever is Tangela Smith, who replaced Ebony. Smith has played 12 years in Pro Basketball, and we look forward to seeing her play this season with the Fever.

I am looking forward to this season for the Fever, and it should be fun as always for my family and me.
