Wild Card Playoffs Results

leave a comment »

As the wild card games finish only four teams have survived at least another week in the playoffs. These teams are the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans for the AFC. And the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks for the NFC.

The weekend started off with the Houston Texans vs. the Cincinnati Bengals. It took awhile for both of these teams to get something going as both went 0-3 on their first possesion, and the majority of the points came from field goals, and both teams got only one TD. The Texans hung on and won 19-13. The Texans will now go onto play the New England Patriots on Sunday @ 4:30.

The next game was the Green Bay Packers vs. the Minnesota Vikings. These two teams met last week and the Vikings won with a field goal. But this week would be different as their starting QB Christian Ponder was not able to play due to an elbow injury. The Packers won 24-10 and the Vikings struggled the entire game. I think the game would have gone much differently is the Vikings had their regular QB, but the Packers win and will go onto play against the San Fransisco 49ers on Saturday @ 8:00.

The games continued on Sunday with the Indianapolis Colts against the Baltimore Ravens. This was a big game for both teams as it could’ve potentially been the last game for Line Backers Ray Lewis, as he is going to retire at the end of the season. And a big game for the Colts as it would have been Andrew Luck’s first playoffs game, ever. All of the Colts’ points came from field goals and the Colts lost 24-9. The Ravens will now go onto play against the Denver Broncos and Peyton Manning Saturday @ 4:30.

The wild card games concluded with the Seattle Seahawks at the Washington Redskins. The Redskins started off strong with 2 TDs in the first quarter, but did not score for the rest of the game. The Seahawks didn’t take the lead until the fourth quarter were they wrapped up the game 24-14. The Seahawks will now play against the Atlanta Falcons Sunday @ 1:00 pm.

Next week four more teams will be ellimated from the playoffs and four other teams will move on to at least one more week in the playoffs and another chance at getting closer to the Super Bowl.

2013 playoffs: Wild Card Round

leave a comment »

As 2012 comes to an end, so does the 2012 NFL regular season. Now the real fun begins as 12 teams fight to go to Super Bowl XLVII. This week eight teams will be playing in the wild card round, the winners this week will go onto play in the division round.

The first game will against the Houston Texans vs. the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday January 5th @ 4:30 pm. The Texans who were strong all through the season have come into the playoffs losing their last two game, while the Bengals have come into the playoffs winning their past two games. Everyone in Indianapolis is drooling for the Colts to play the Broncos, and for that to happen, the Bengals have to lose. Sports pundits are calling the Bengals non-contenders, so I’m hoping the Texans win this.

Prediction: But, I think the Bengals will come out on top, because Houston never does very well in the playoffs. The Bengals have done pretty well in the last few weeks, and the Texans had a tough time against two medium teams.

The next game will be on Saturday night @ 8:00, featuring the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings. These teams played against each other only this past week and the Vikings won with a last-second field goal. This game is really one to watch considering it’s a classic matchup with a long-time rivalry. This is a tough call because it could go either way. The Packers are the better team, but the Vikings have possible MVP Adrian Peterson and the most recent win.

Prediction: I’m picking the Packers. They just got back one of their top receivers (Cobb) and one of their top defenders (Woodson).

Sunday’s games start with the Indianapolis Colts at the Baltimore Ravens. These two teams have met before in the past games, and Baltimore still hates the Colts for leaving in 1984 (this, from the former Cleveland Browns who have forgotten about their own off-season desertion in 1996).

This will be a good game as Colts head coach Chuck Pagano was the Ravens’ defensive coordinator last year, and the Ravens offensive coordinator is Jim Caldwell, last year’s head coach for the Colts. Pagano knows the Ravens’ defense, and if the Colts haven’t changed too much, Caldwell still knows their offense. It’s like a chess match where the players switched sides halfway through.

Prediction: This is a tough game to call, but my heart says it’s the Colts.

The last game of the wild card rounds is the Seattle Seahawks vs. the Washington Redskins. These two teams will face off Sunday @ 4:30 pm. This is an exciting end to the weekend, because two of the season’s best rookies will face off against each other. Both teams have had their fair share of struggles, but also a fair amount of success. Two of the three Rookie of the Year contenders — RGIII and Russell Wilson — are in this game, with the Colts’ Andrew Luck in another, so this is an exciting game. But I don’t think this will be a high-scoring game. Both teams will score less than 20 points. RGIII is not as healthy as he should be in the playoffs and Wilson does not have a number one receiver.

Prediction: I’m picking the Seahawks. My dad says the Redskins because they have Pierre Garçon. But I think it’s the Seahawks because 1) they beat the Patriots and 49ers (come on!), 2) RGIII is not healthy, and 3) Garçon has been known to drop the ball on several occasions.

Four other teams have earned the pleasure of a bye week: Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, and Tom Brady and the New England Patriots for the AFC. In the NFC, the San Francisco 49ers and the Atlanta Falcons will be at home resting.  All of these teams will have a chance to play next week in the divisional rounds, but who they play all depends on how the wild card round plays out over the next few days.
