Fever vs. Lynx Game 4 of the WNBA Finals:Results

leave a comment »

Last night the Indiana Fever played against the Minnesota Lynx in Game 4 of the WNBA Finals. The Fever led the Finals 2-1 after beating the Lynx in Game 3 on Friday. One more win would mean the first WNBA Championship Title for the Fever. One that was lost in the 2009 against the Phoenix Mercury, this year the Fever were determined that this was their time.

The Lynx started off with the first points of the game but the Fever answered back quickly 5-4. After that, the game went back and forth between the teams. Eventually the Fever pulled ahead 13-6. The past three games in the Finals have been very physical games and last night the referees were trying to keep the physicality to a minimum. Like in the last game they played, the Lynx had trouble with their shooting and the Fever made it very hard for Seimone Augustus to take a shot or even get her hands on the ball. The Fever led at the end of the first quarter 25-18.

The Fever did a very good job at getting the rebounds but had trouble with getting their second chances at making the shot. Though Katie Douglas was in uniform, she did not start the game, or play much in the game. Karima Christmas was in the game and did her part in getting rebounds and even got a 3-pointer for the team. With 6:22 left in the second quarter the Lynx had started to come back 33-30 (Fever), then they tied it at 38. But after being head to head with the Lynx the Fever managed to pull ahead and led at the end of the half 47-42.

On entering the third quarter the Fever take a 10 point lead 56-46, this was the biggest lead that the Fever were able to get. After that the Fever had trouble making baskets and getting rebounds. Fever lead at the end of the third quarter 63-58.

One of the biggest factors that helped the Fever was the crowd, there was so much energy from the game selling out and all of the fans were wearing red in support of the Fever. Many people were there to help support the Fever including Pacers players, Colts players, Tamika Catchings’ dad and her coach from Tennessee Pat Summit. As the game got closer and closer to the end the crowd got louder and louder. With only 3 seconds left in the game Katie Douglas went into the game and joined her teammates as the final seconds wore down from the clock, and the Indiana Fever won the WNBA Championship 87-78.

This is the Indiana Fever’s first Title in franchise history. Many people have talked about how Tamika Catchings was missing only one thing from her career: a Championship. Finally Douglas, Catchings, and Tammy Sutton-Brown have their trophy with their team. There will be a parade in celebration of the Fever’s success on Tuesday October 23rd in Downtown Indianapolis @ 12:00 pm.

Fever vs. Lynx Game 3 of the WNBA Finals:Results

Last night the Indiana Fever played against the Minnesota Lynx in Game 3 of the WNBA Finals. The series is tied 1-1, Bankers Life Field house sold out, and the Fever fans wore red in support of the Fever, it was an amazing sight to be seen. The Fever again had to ply with out star player Katie Douglas who was still out with a badly sprained ankle, when she tried to play before the game, she shook her head no, it was not ready yet. Jeanette Pohlen was also out for the Fever due to a torn ACL in her left knee she from  the last game against the Lynx, she is out for the rest of the finals. Both were on the side line cheering on their teammates, and wearing red.

The game started with the first points going to the Lynx, but the Fever were quick to respond and the game went back and forth. Though it was close, the Lynx took the lead 12-8. Shortly after that the Fever took the lead with the help of two steals in a row 15-12. The Fever did a really good job with defending the Lynx making it almost impossible to get close to the basket. Also making it easier for the Fever to steal the ball. The Lynx went for four minutes without scoring a single point, soon after that the first quarter ended with the Fever on top 21-16.

The Lynx had a rough time making shots and missing the rebounds, which was surprising because they were the top defensive and rebounding team of the WNBA in the regular season. Because of that the Fever pulled ahead and lead at the half 45-27. In the first half the Lynx only had one assist, they were also the number one team for assists in the regular season.

In the third the Lynx still had not  found their rhythm and the Fever led by 30 at one point. Needless to say the Fever kept leading at the end of the third 70-38. The largest Finals gap of victory is held by the L.A. Sparks who beat Chicago back in 2001, that was a 28-point win.

By the fourth quarter the Fever were exhausted and were starting to have trouble with their shooting, but they still held off the Lynx from scoring. And the Fever wrapped up the game and won 76-59. One of the Fever’s star players was Shavonte Zellous, not a big shooter for the Fever but made a huge difference with her 30 points (a career high) and encouraging her team throughout the game.

The Fever now lead the series 2-1 and one more win will win the WNBA Finals. The next game will be on Sunday October 21st at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indiana the game will be shown on ESPN2 @ 8:00. Fans again are encouraged to wear red in support of the Fever. One of the reasons for the sell out game was thanks to the Indiana Pacers for providing 4,000 tickets to give away to fans. The Indianapolis Colts did that on Saturday the 20th as well with giving away 2,500 tickets and will also be attending the game on Sunday. Different Indiana teams are coming together to cheer on fellow teams in their road to victory. This next game for the Fever will deffinately be one to watch.

Last night the Indiana Fever played against the Minnesota Lynx in game 2 of the WNBA Finals in Minnesota. The Fever lead the series (best of 5) 1-0. This is the last game in Minnesota unless a game 5 is required.

Tamika Catchings got the first points of the game but it took them 1:30 to get it. The Lynx were quick to get the lead 6-4 and the game went back and forth between the two teams. In the first half both of the teams were having trouble with their shooting, but despite that the Fever got on top for the first half 18-11.

In the second quarter the Fever picked up their shooting and got a 10-point lead on the Lynx 23-13. The game was turned out to be a very rough game many players ended up on the floor from either a shove or a trip, Jeanette Pohlen injured her left knee and was not able to play for the rest of the game. It was a very physical game and Lynx player Lindsay Whalen got in early foul trouble with 3 fouls before the half. As rough as this game was the Lynx caught up and the Fever start to have trouble holding them off. But the Fever prevailed and barely stayed on top at the end of the half 33-31.

After the break the Lynx took their first lead (36-35) since back in the first quarter (9-8). But the Fever were quick to come back and they tied the game at 44. Then the game goes back and forth between the teams. The Lynx are soon in foul trouble and some of their star players have 3 fouls. A technical foul was called on the Lynx’s coach Cheryl Reeve after she ripped off her jacket and yelled at the refs, soon afterwards Whalen got called for a technical as well. But that just seemed to encourage the Lynx to play harder and they did as well as took the lead at the end of the third 60-55.

Things just went downhill from there for the Fever as they did not score for 4:30, and Pohlen out for the rest of the game and Katie Douglas at home because of a sprained ankle, they were lacking some people who could throw the 3-pointers that they really needed. During that time the Lynx took a 14-point lead 73-59 and didn’t look back. The Fever were unable to overcome the Lynx in the end, and the Fever lose 83-71.

Game 3 will be in Indiana on Friday October 19th @ 8:00. It will also be aired on ESPN2. With the series tied at 1-1 both teams need 2 more wins in order to win the WNBA Finals.

Fever vs. Lynx Game 1 of WNBA Finals: Results

Last night the Indiana Fever played against the Minnesota Lynx in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals in Minnesota. This is the second trip to the finals from both teams, Indiana made it back in 2007 but lost, and Minnesota made it only last year and won. Minnesota is hoping to have back-to-back Titles, and Indiana is trying to win their first Title. This is a really good match up this year.

The Fever were without one of their star shooters Katie Douglas, who stayed back in Indy due to a badly sprained ankle in their last game against the Connecticut Sun. Despite their set back the Fever took the  lead 7-3. But the Lynx tied the game up 14-14, the Lynx took the lead 17-16 but was not able to keep that lead and the Fever were back on top and remained on top at the end of the first quarter 25-20.

The Lynx were having difficulties with their shooting and it was really affecting them as the Fever pulled away more as time went on. All of the Fever players stepped up and played their very best against the WNBA’s top team. Closer to the end of the half the Lynx were starting to catch up a bit but the Fever held them off and had the lead at the end of the first half 43-40.

One of the problems that helped the Lynx catch up was the Fever’s trouble with rebounding. The Lynx are one of the top leading teams in rebounding, so in order for the Fever to continue to have the lead, is to out rebound the Lynx. In the third quarter the Fever were starting to get into trouble as the Lynx went on a 8-0 streak and tied the game @ 50. After that Lynx took the lead for only the second time since their lead (17-16) and the Lynx have the lead at the end of the third 58-56.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter the game went back and forth between the two teams and were separated by only two points. The Lynx were the top defensive team in the WNBA in the regular season. So in order for the Fever to win they would have to beat their defense first. Finally the Fever managed to pull ahead 65-61. As the game went on both teams got more physical and the game got more intense. But in the end the Fever came up on top and won the game 76-70.

Tamika Catchings did a good job in the game but struggled near the end, but throughout the game she showed great strength and leadership with getting 20 points for her team. Erlana Larkins played a big part in the game with 16 points and 15 rebounds. With several major blocks and steals she was an important player for the Fever.

The Fever now lead the series 1-0. Game 2 will be on Wednesday in Minnesota again @ 8:00 on ESPN. If the Fever continue to play like they did last night they stand a good chance at winning the WNBA Finals.

Fever vs. Sun Game 3 Eastern Conference Finals: Results

leave a comment »

Last night the Indiana Fever played against the Connecticut Sun in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final. This game determined who would go onto play against the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA Championship Finals.

It was a slow start for both teams as almost two minutes went by without either team scoring. Eventually the Sun got the first points of the game, that would be the only points the Sun would get for awhile as the Fever quickly took the lead 9-2. It was obvious the Sun were having difficulties with their shooting. Five minutes into the game Katie Douglas, one of the star players for the Fever twisted her ankle very bad and had to go to the hospital for x-rays. Needless to say she was out for the rest of the game. But that didn’t seem to faze the rest of the team, in fact it seemed to cause them to play better, and the Fever had the lead at the end of the first quarter 18-10.

As the game went on it got more physical between the two teams as both were trying so hard to get the final place in the WNBA Finals. But the Fever defense was on top last night with the score 25-16. This was the biggest lead the Fever have had in this entire series, but it would not be their biggest lead of the game. The Fever still had the lead at the end of the half 43-24.

In the third quarter the Fever kept their lead of 20+ points over the Sun, but getting closer to the end of the quarter the Sun started to make their baskets. Briann January was having a bit of an off night compared to the past four games but she still played a big part in keeping the Sun from scoring and getting 12 points as well. Fever keep the lead at the end of the third 68-48.

All of the Fever players stepped up last night, Tamika Catchings did really well last night and got 22 points for her team. Jeanette Pohlen who has not played much since the end of the regular season got 14 points as well. The Fever won the game 87-71.

The Fever will now go onto play against the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA Championship Finals. Game 1 and 2 will be in Minnesota and Game 3 and if necessary Game 4 will be in Indiana. Game 1 will be on Sunday October 14th a@ 8:00 on ESPN2.

Fever vs. Sun Game 2 of Eastern Conference Finals: Results.

leave a comment »

Last night the Indiana Fever played against the Connecticut Sun in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals. This game was a win or go home game for the Fever.

The Sun opened up the game with a 3-pointer and took the lead quickly, and things were starting to look bad for the Fever as they had yet to score. When the Fever finally did score the Sun were up by 11-2. But the Fever still had trouble with their scoring. Jessica Davenport played in last night’s game as well. Davenport did not played in the past 4 games of the playoffs. After awhile the Fever finally found their rhythm and started to catch up, and the first quarter ended with the Sun in the lead 24-20. But Briann January had gotten three fouls in the first quarter and was unable to play in the second quarter.

In the second quarter the Fever were doing much better with their rebounds and their second chances. Tamika Catchings had played so much better in this game than she had in the past couple of games. The Fever took the lead for the first time in the game with 1:35 left in the half. And the Fever still led at the end of the half 46-43.

During the whole third quarter both teams were only separated by a couple points. Both teams had a hard time of putting distance between them and the other team, but the Sun led by 1 point at the end of the third 57-56.

In the fourth quarter the Fever managed to pull way from the Sun 61-57. This is the longest lead the Fever have had in the entire game. But soon the game goes back to a one point game. With :25 left in the game, the game was tied 76-76 and Allison Hightower was at the free throw line after getting fouled, but Hightower missed the free throw and Catchings got the rebound. With a toss to January the game looked like it was already over but January misses the basket. She scrambles back in bounds and hits the ball to Shavonte Zellous. With :5 left on the clock Zellous shot the ball, and the ball makes it in with only 0.5 seconds left in the game, the Sun didn’t have enough time to even make it down the court and the Fever win 78-76.

Game 3 of the Eastern Conference will be Thursday October 11th in Connecticut @ 8:30. This game will determine who will go onto play the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA Finals, which start on Sunday October 14th in Minnesota. Game 3 will be the game to watch as both teams are fighting to keep their season alive and for a spot in the Finals.

Fever vs. Connecticut Sun Game 1 of Eastern Conference Finals Results

leave a comment »

Last night the Indiana Fever play against the Connecticut Sun in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals in Connecticut. The Sun have beaten the Fever in three out of the four games that were played in the regular season.

Tamika Catchings opened up the game with a 3-pointer for the Fever and the Fever took the lead early. The Fever did a really good job at keeping the ball away from the Sun, and getting those rebounds. But the Sun catch up and the game is separated by only one point, going back and forth between the two teams. And the Fever pull ahead and lead by the end of the first quarter. The Fever got four 3-pointers in the first, but also two fouls on Briann January. The Fever lead at the end of the first quarter 22-14.

Jeanette Pohlen comes into the game in the second quarter. Pohlen has not played in the past two playoffs game. As the game progresses the players became more physical between the teams. As the Sun close in on the Fever, the Fever have to fight harder for the ball. At the end  of the half the game is tied at 30. In the next half the Fever really need to not play as physical as it is costing them fouls that they cannot afford to have.

At the beginning of the third both teams have stepped up their game. The Fever start to fall behind at the Sun take the lead for only the third time 38-34. The Fever have also struggled with their scoring and are forced to shoot the ball from a distance. Catchings has also struggled with her shooting and the Fever trail at the end of the third 52-43.

Katie Douglas got her momentum back in the and got her team some more 3-pointers. The Fever really needed this kick in order to be able to catch up and to be able to play with the same energy they had in the first half. And though the Fever had that kick they were not able to catch up and the Sun win 76-64.

Game 2 will be in Indiana on Monday October 8th at 8:00 pm. The Fever will need to inprove on their shooting, and need to come out and play like they did in the first half. If they do that, they will win their next game.

The Minnesota Lynx beat the L.A. Sparks in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals on Thursday. Game 2 will be on Sunday in LA @ 3:30 pm.
